Robotic Hair Transplant
Robotic Hair Transplant
The only ‘true’ robotic hair transplant India is the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant. Many sites promote and include lot of other systems (like Neograft, discussed below) in the robotic hair transplant category. However ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant qualifies as the only truly robotic hair transplant system and fits the definition of a robot: “a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer”.
What the robot does is that it scans the back of the scalp and locates the follicles by sensors and extracts the follicles by vacuum assisted punch. It reduces the work of the hair transplant surgeon by half. However, implantation part is still carried out by the hair transplant technicians. The upcoming versions of this robot are targeted at the implanting process also making it a completely automated robotic hair transplant machine, a boon to all. But it still has a long way to go. As compared to a hair transplant surgeon, ARTAS® is quiet slow and currently small surgeries up to 1500 grafts are only possible. This is not practical option for majority of the patients, at least the current version of it. However, we do expect it to get a lot better in the future. Till that time, Motorized standard FUE procedure is the leading choice among the hair transplant surgeons. Motorized FUE allows large sessions of more than 4000 grafts and is much affordable to the patients than the robotic hair transplant.
We are not against ARTAS . In fact, if it matches even 70% of what we do in our practice then we would be the first in India to buy this machine.
